Watering Your Garden Without Getting Hosed (or How To Avoid Scams, Part 2)

By: Ben Needles

As promised in part 1 of this series, here are some more examples of what to avoid in order to keep from becoming the victim of scamming. I have come to really enjoy the barrage of emails I get promising me that I can make more money than I can carry if Ill only buy their miracle e-book or join their membership site. Dont get me wrong, there are some great resources out there designed to educate the internet entrepreneur, but they dont typically promise you the moon. The following are some tactics used to coerce you into clicking the buy now button. Note how these tactics are based on knowledge of human nature which is used to the sellers advantage.

Beware of the Limited Time Offer

Watch out for the offer which expires soon, usually by the end of the day. This is done to make you click on the buy now button without thinking it over first. This type of sales pitch is based on knowledge of human nature that tries to prey on our tendency to avoid loss; even if it is the loss of something we dont have yet. Dont fall for this. First, I have passed on these offers and then gone back to the same site a day or so later and found that the expiration date has now been extended, to the end of that day, big surprise. Second, it is usually a good idea to sleep on a decision for at least one night before taking action. After all, that is usually how we buy homes, cars, etc. It needs to apply to internet decisions as well. Third, and you can hang your hat on this, you will be approached again, there is a never ending string of limited time offers. If you get used to letting them pass you will save a great deal of money.

Beware Of the Proof

With many if these offers the seller will include a screen-shot of their bank register or of checks made out in large amounts to prove that their system works. These pictures are designed to get you excited about the possibility of your own bank statement looking similar. Frankly, with the graphics programs available currently you can create any legitimate appearing document you want to. Maybe these examples of proof are real and maybe they are not. You wont be able to know either way. But you do have to ask yourself is this how I would sell something? In any case I would not use these screen shots as the deciding factor for purchasing these items. It really is true you know: If it looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Those screen-shots look a little too good to be true.

The Bottom Line

It is fairly simple avoiding being scammed if you just consider what it is you are being offered, how it is being offered to you, and how likely it is that the offer is credible.
Honest resources speak honestly and dont try to promise you the impossible. The fact is that if you are going to succeed online or in life you will have to work for it. This will include an investment of time in order to educate yourself concerning business in general and especially business on the net. In general, really successful people are those willing to work hard for what they get.

Oh sure, occasionally you hear of someone who struck it rich with a winning lottery ticket but those people are few. By the way, many who win the lottery are broke within a few years because they basically blow the whole thing on the wrong items and they dont think to save or invest any of it. Why? Because as people we dont tend to value something as much if we didnt put something of ourselves into it. Would you be as likely to blow your entire retirement savings on a whim? It takes a lifetime to save enough to retire, and that money represents a lot of sweat and effort. If you treat your online business with this kind of respect and put something of yourself into it, in the end you will have something you can be proud of that you earned. And nobody can scam you out of that.

Be on the lookout for part 3. It wont be far behind Im sure.
